Spooky party food

Terrifying treats...

October 31st is Halloween. Why not make some spooky party food to celebrate?
Here are some treats you can try:

Ask an adult to help with any peeling and chopping. Wash your hands before you start.

Beetle juice

You will need:

  • a few blackberries

  • red grape juice or raspberry juice (with no added sugar)

  • some glasses or cups

  • a fork

  • a small bowl

  1. Put the blackberries in the bowl and squash them with your fork.

  2. Put a few of the squashed blackberries in each glass and add the fruit juice.

Celery claws

You will need:

  • some celery sticks

  • cooked beetroot

  • low-fat yoghurt

  • a small sharp knife

  • a fork

  • a grater

  • a cup or very small bowl

  • a plate.

  1. Ask an adult to help you put some long slits in two celery sticks from the top down to make claws.

  2. Put some cooked beetroot on a fork and grate it.

    3. Mix it with low-fat yoghurt to make a blood dip.

  3. Peel off a 'claw' of celery and dip it!

Eerie eyes

You will need:

  • dried apple rings

  • dried apricots

  • raisins.

  1. Lay out a dried apple ring.

    2. Put a dried apricot on top.

  2. Add a raisin to make a pupil for your eerie eye!

Eyeball eggs

You will need:

  • eggs

  • avocado

  • houmous

  • black olives (without stones)

  • tomato ketchup

  • a small saucepan

  • a teaspoon

  • a cocktail stick.

  1. Ask an adult to boil some eggs for 10 minutes (one egg makes one pair of eyes).

  2. Let the hard-boiled eggs cool and then peel them.

  3. Cut each egg in half lengthways and take out the yolk.

    4. Use your spoon to fill each hole with the avocado houmous.

  4. Put a black olive in the middle of each blob of houmous.

    6. Dip the cocktail stick in some ketchup and draw on some wiggly bloodshot lines.

Frankenstein's fingers & monster mash

For Frankenstein's fingers

You need: at least 8 carrots, sliced almonds, low-fat cream cheese.

  1. Wash 5 carrots. Try to pick 4 long ones for fingers and 1 short one for the thumb.
  2. Ask an adult to carve a small hole at the top of each carrot for the fingernail.
  3. Stick a sliced almond fingernail on top of each hole using low-fat cream cheese.
  4. Peel some carrots to use for dipping.

For the monster mash

You need: 4 ripe avocadoes, 3 tablespoons of low-fat sour cream, 4 tablespoons of tomato salsa, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice

  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl to make your monster mash. Serve with Frankenstein's fingers and plenty of carrots for dipping.

Frightening fangs

You need: a Red Delicious apple, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 can tinned strawberries, a blender, a small bowl for the dip.

  1. Wash a Red Delicious apple and ask an adult to help you cut it into slices.
  2. Drizzle the slices with lemon juice to stop them turning brown.
  3. Make a blood dip by mixing together a can of tinned strawberries – you might need to ask an adult to use a blender to do this.
  4. Pour the mixture into a bowl and balance the apple fangs around the edge.

Ghost toast

You need: some slices of wholemeal bread, a toaster, a small sharp knife.

  1. Ask an adult to help you toast some bread.
  2. Let the toast cool slightly then cut out some ghost shapes.
  3. Dip the ghost toast in your slime soup!

Jelly monster

You need: sugar-free lime jelly powder or cubes, blackcurrants, kiwi fruit, a heatproof jug, a spoon, egg cups, a knife with a rounded end, a small sharp knife.

  1. Ask an adult to mix up the jelly using half as much boiling water as it says on the packet.
  2. Put a blackcurrant in each egg cup.
  3. Slowly pour in the jelly to fill each cup. The blackcurrant should sink to the bottom.
  4. Put the egg cups somewhere cool and wait for the jelly to set.
  5. Use your knife with the rounded end to help you slide the jelly eyeballs out of the egg cups and put them upside-down on a plate.
  6. Cut some tooth shapes into chunks of kiwi fruit and arrange the chunks on the plate to look like teeth.

Pizza mummies

You will need (for 6 mummies): 3 wholegrain muffins, 3 tablespoons low-salt tomato ketchup, 1 teaspoon tomato purée, some black olives, some small pieces of a green pepper, low-fat cheddar cheese.

  1. Ask an adult to help you cut 3 wholegrain muffins in half and toast them lightly.
  2. Make some pizza sauce by mixing together the tomato ketchup and purée.
  3. Spread the pizza sauce on the muffins and add black olive slices and bits of green pepper for eyes.
  4. Drape thin slices of low-fat cheddar cheese over the muffin to look like bandages.
  5. Ask an adult to grill the muffins for about 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted.

Roasted teeth

Remember – very young children should not have seeds or nuts in case of choking.

You need: a pumpkin, some olive oil, some pieces of kitchen towel, a sharp knife, an ice-cream scoop or large spoon, a baking tray, oven gloves, an A4 piece of orange paper, sticky tape.

  1. Ask an adult to cut the top off your pumpkin and then scoop out the flesh and seeds with your ice-cream scoop or spoon. You can use the pumpkin shell to make a lantern.
  2. Rinse the seeds well in cold water, taking off as much of the stringy pulp as you can.
  3. Pat them dry with your kitchen towel.
  4. Put a little olive oil on a baking tray and scatter the seeds over it.
  5. Bake the seeds in the oven at 150ºC, 300ºF or Gas Mark 2 for 30 minutes.
  6. Ask an adult to take the tray out of the oven using oven gloves then leave the seeds to cool. Meanwhile, roll up the piece of paper to make a cone shape and stick it together with sticky tape.
  7. Put the pumpkin seeds in the cone then ask your friends and family if they would like to try your roasted teeth!

Slime soup

You need: vegetable stock, frozen peas, fresh mint, a heatproof measuring jug, a medium-size saucepan, a wooden spoon, a food processor, a black bowl or a witch's cauldron.

  1. Ask an adult to mix up the vegetable stock in the measuring jug to make 750ml of liquid then pour it into your saucepan.
  2. Add 500g of frozen peas.
  3. Stir with a wooden spoon then boil the mixture for 10 minutes.
  4. Put the mixture in a food processor with a handful of fresh mint and blend until smooth.

Spaghetti worms

You need: spaghetti (preferably wholemeal), tomato pasta sauce, a large saucepan, a colander, a small saucepan, a wooden spoon, a bowl.

  1. Ask an adult to cook a handful of spaghetti in a large saucepan of boiling water, then strain it using the colander.
  2. Put the tomato pasta sauce in the small saucepan and ask an adult to gently heat it, stirring with a wooden spoon.
  3. Mix the spaghetti and sauce together, curling the pasta with a fork to make wriggly worms in mud!

Spooky smoothie

You will need: a cupful of skimmed milk, 5 strawberries, 5 blackberries (if you can't find fresh strawberries tinned ones will work too), a blender.

  1. Ask an adult to blend the ingredients together to make a spooky smoothie!

Wicked witches

You will need: some pears, raisins, a red apple, a carrot, black card, pipe cleaners.

  1. Ask an adult to cut a pear in half lengthways.
  2. Cut a small piece from the top of the pear where the hat will sit.
  3. Use this piece to make a nose. Carefully carve a small hole where you want the nose to be and push it in.
  4. Carefully make some holes in the pear for the eyes and a wart. Push some raisins into the holes.
  5. Add a small piece of red apple for the mouth, and some strips of carrot for the hair.
  6. Make a witch's hat out of black card and a pipe cleaner to finish it off!
